So today’s PAD prompt was to write an ekphrastic poem. An ekphrastic poem is a poem inspired by a piece of art, whether that’s a painting, a sculpture, mixed media, or something beyond all that. The art I chose was Mary Cassat’s, The Boating Party. They say a picture has a thousand words, I managed to give you my story in a tenth of that. I hope you’ll enjoy—and that it gives you a smile.

The Boating Party

Dear Husband, I am trying
to maintain the ladylike demeanor
that my mother instilled in me,
but your silly idea of fun
has gone on long enough.
Your daughter is hungry,
and so am I.
Don't tell me to feed her here;
I can't possibly expose myself
in this dingy to feed her,
not with so many other boats on the lake.
To add insult to injury,
poor Charlotte has soiled her nappy;
it is currently seeping through
and soaking my gown.
I don't know how I will get home
without the world knowing
my embarrassment and
thinking me a bad mother.
Please, for the love of God,
take us home now!
