Silly people make resolutions,
especially when they know
they will fall by the wayside.
They always do.
It's just a matter of time.
I used to be one of them,
but I stopped that long ago.
Instead of promising impossible tasks,
that make me feel bad when I fail,
I make a list of resolutions
that I will not even attempt to keep,
because they are just silly
like the people who make resolutions.

I will eat healthy and exercise more.
I will lose weight.
I will start smoking.
I will meditate regularly.
I will sleep through the night
without getting up to pee.
I will become a Conservative Republican.
I will go skiing and bungee jumping.
I will learn to love being eaten alive by mosquitoes.
I will burst into song in public places
and dance down crowded streets.
I will stop being irritated by people
who don't follow the rules,
and stop thinking 8 out of 10 drivers
I see on the roads are assholes.
I will be intentionally mean and rude,
and never smile at anyone.
I will stop taking joy in my family and friends,
and if they need me I'll say I'm too busy.
I will throw out the old and embrace the new,
especially things that hold precious memories.
I will stop being thankful for having the best
parents, sister, husband, and children.
I will forget that I am lucky and blessed
in more ways than I can count.
I will believe I'm an impostor,
that nobody really likes or cares
about the words I put down on paper.
I will stop writing poetry—short stories too.
I will give up loving.
I will give up hope.
