Meandering Through Life
These days I mostly
meander through life.
I do what I want,
which might be nothing at all.
No alarms to be set for the crack of dawn,
I get up when I want,
go to bed when I feel like it.
There's no stressful commute
or job to deal with.
Life is good.
Most of the time.
There are days
when I have no choice
except to do the things
that really need doing,
without the luxury
of putting it off till tomorrow—
or the day after that.
When push comes to shove,
sometimes you have to
just do it,
as the Nike ads used to say.
And that's okay too,
because there's no time clock to punch,
no boss over my shoulder watching,
judging whether I took too long a break
or micromanaging over my shoulder.
I can do things my way, at my pace,
without ever thinking
I'll be fired if I don't.
I can quit when I want to,
and life will still be there
when I'm ready to go again.
I'm savoring the pace,
strolling this way and that,
meandering through life.
