Confessions of an Easter Bunny
I never asked for this job.
I was minding my own business,
helping the Mrs. take care of the hutch,
on the lookout for kits trying
to make a great escape.
I don't mean to brag,
but we're a prolific bunch,
and that's a big job.
Then one day some weird stranger
stops by and asks me
if I'd like to make some easy money.
I should've been more suspicious
but with so many mouths to feed,
I didn't ask a lot of questions.
Before I could say hippity-hop,
I was snatched away,
put in some silly costume,
with a basket of colored eggs on my back,
and told I had to deliver them
to all the houses in the neighborhood.
I mean, what the heck?
They should've let the damn chickens
deliver their own eggs,
but the money wasn't bad
and it was only once a year.
Problem was the guy
kept coming back every year,
and the job got bigger
and the territory grew.
They started adding chocolate
to the basket,
along with other candy,
even toys!
When I complained,
they played to my vanity;
they sculpted my image in the chocolate.
It wasn't a great likeness,
and I'm embarrassed to admit it,
but I was flattered.
Year after year this went on.
The job got bigger and bigger.
The Mrs. was complaining
about being stuck at home
taking care of everything by herself.
It wasn't a happy hutch, I can tell you.
And that's when the guy in charge
upped the game again.
He said the territory was so big—
too big for one lone rabbit on his own!
Why not split it up between
the Mrs. and the kitties;
best of all everyone gets paid!
You know the rest of the story.
It's a pyramid scheme, I tell you.
If someone comes knocking on your hutch
offering you a golden opportunity,
just slam the door in his face.

Happy Easter!

And Happy Poetry Month!
Loving (and laughing) at the fun twist at the end that follows an expertly, creatively woven tale (or is that ‘tail’?)
Thanks so much! So happy to hear you enjoyed this bit of whimsy.
Fun poem with good insights. I admire your talent, and your energy in participating in PAD.
Thanks so much, Alan! I didn’t get a chance to finish this year because I was away for the last 10 days, but I do try my best to complete the challenge when it comes around in April & November!
