We were taught from childhood
if you can't say something nice,
don't say anything at all.
It was a lesson given about kindness,
not wanting to hurt someone's feelings.
It's a good thought, a lesson I practice to this day.

And yet...

When you never say anything nice,
there is only silence,
and in that void demons thrive.
In the silence,
self-esteem and confidence
dwindles.
We are diminished,
candles burning low
until our very worth
is snuffed out;
we are a puddle of useless wax
with no wick left to light.

We can manage truth given with kindness.
We can even learn from it
and become stronger.
But we suffer in silence,
imagining only the worst in ourselves.
Please say something.
