The are rituals to our farewells and goodnights. They are tried and true, and we'll wait till they are satisfied before we continue on to wherever or turn over to go to sleep. It's not superstition, but an unspoken acknowledgment that if rituals are kept all will be well, and on the off chance that they are not, our last words are always I love you.
