Up early, sitting alone and quietly waiting for the day’s festivities to begin, I felt my eyes fill and these words came to me unbidden. I share them with you now, with hope that for those of you who are motherless on this Mother’s Day, they might bring comfort.

You Never Told Me

You told me many things

throughout my life but

you never told me

where to find you

when I needed to

feel you close again.

You never said

look up to the stars

or see me in the sunset.

You never said

you’d be the cardinal

outside my window

or the butterfly

that landed on my shoulder.

Those are notions

I’ve gathered on my own.

You only told me

that you’d love me forever

and that you’d always be with me.

Maybe

you never told me

how to find you

because you never left.

    1. Thank you so much. As a mother, I know that love never dies, so I’m sure you’re right. I still wish she was here to hug in person, but you can’t have everything. Hope you have a great Mother’s Day.
