Cardinals In The Snow

I woke to snow falling;

two cardinals huddled in the bitter cold

as they rested in a bush outside my window.

I always take cardinals as a sign from beyond,

departed loved ones saying hello,

we’re still here,

you’re not alone.

Today they brought news.

Happy news– a birth,

a beautiful rose blooming

through winter’s chill.

Today they brought news.

Sad news– a death,

aged and ailing,

a great tree felled in the night.

Only days ago

the old year died

and a new year was born.

The cycle of life goes on

whether we like it or not.

Today the cardinals visited

to say hello,

we’re still here,

you are not alone.
