If I’m honest, most days I find waking up with the birds is for the birds, but on both of my visits to Maui I found that time just before the sunrise to be very peaceful and one of my favorite things. This poem was inspired by my recent visit.
Morning Birds
In the pre-dawn dim,
while stars twinkle their last,
I sit on the porch, sipping tea,
and listen to crepuscular birds
prepare to break the day.
A cacophony of cheeps and chirps, caws and coos,
they twitter and tweet,
and beat their wings against the sky.
Wake up! Wake up!
A rooster crows in the distance, loud and insistent–
Cock-a-doodle-do! Cock-a-doodle-do!
Wake up! Wake up!
I breath deep, filling my lungs with light and hope
as the sun climbs slowly over the mountain.
A red-crested woodpecker cocks his head in greeting,
but keeps silent in the morning melee;
in the space of a breath, he is soaring high and free,
and I am left behind, wishing I could fly.
